DIETERS have been rocked by findings the popular ‘low fat’ sausages they’ve been eating for months are NINE TIMES worse for them than initially thought.

Slimming World said Porky Lights should now be counted as 4.5 ‘Syn points’ EACH instead of just 0.5 – meaning thousands of dieters have been unknowingly breaking their strict diets for months.

When dieters reported putting on weight Slimming World re-categorised them after “analysis showed the sausages were indeed much higher in fat than the nutrition panel indicated”.

Syns is shorthand for synergy – Slimming World believes it’s the synergy between the three components of its plan – Free Foods, Healthy Extras and Syns.

Many of the Syns are what other diet plans would call ‘treats’.

But Syns also includes foods found in the Healthy Extras, allowing you to eat bigger portions of these foods if you want them.

Regardless of the plan you choose to follow, you are allowed five to 15 Syns a day.

These include foods like biscuits, cakes, crisps, alcohol and ice cream.

The Syns value for some foods may vary depending on the plan you are following but as a rough guideline one Syn is equivalent to around 20 calories.

After carrying out its own tests, Slimming World revised Porky Lights Syn value after looking into the nutritional value.

The diet giant is now warning its members they should count each sausage as 4.5 Syns until they can get more details from the manufacturers of the nutritional content.

Porky Whites insist they stand by their testing which is “100% accurate and watertight”.

The Slimming World website warned members: “The Food Co-ordination team at Slimming World Head Office has done some analysis on Porky Lights sausages, after becoming a little concerned about their fatty (albeit delicious!) texture.

“The analysis showed that the sausages were indeed much higher in fat than the nutrition panel indicated – and this does affect their Syn value significantly.

“We’ve been in touch with Porky Lights to let them know our findings, and they’re looking into it as we speak.” What did Porky Whites say about the claims?

Part of the statement read: “Since their launch last year, Porky Lights have become something of a national phenomenon amongst sausage lovers.

“Their very low 3% fat content and minimal calorie count of just 78 calories per sausage, has meant that they are enjoyed by thousands of people who are watching their weight.

“Slimming World’s independent accreditation of just half a Syn per sausage for Porky Lights has also contributed a huge amount to the sausages’ popularity.

“The nutritional values are the result of the most stringent tests we can use. Diet plan to lose weight fast after pregnancy The tests are completed, calculated and certificated by independent, UKAS accredited, food analysis laboratories.

“And as a ‘belt and braces’ approach to making sure our published values are accurate, we not only use UKAS accredited labs (the highest level of accreditation we can) but we run identical, parallel tests through different UKAS labs at least once a month, to double check the findings as part of our own quality control.

“We hope to be working closely with Slimming World to understand how their results differ from the findings of other laboratories and hope that once clarified, the temporary withdrawal of Porky Lights from the Slimming World’s Syns Database can be reversed .” What did Slimming World’s independent tests find?

After the mud-sling match between Porky Lights and Slimming World, the diet firm commissioned an independent investigation.

The tests found the fat levels in the Porky Lights were “very inconsistent” – containing anything between 8.7g to 19.4g of fat – well over the 3.89 published on the nutrition information.

The sausages were promoted as being worth just 0.5 Syn points when they are actually worth 4.5 Syns.

This meant many people had been breaking their diet for months.

Porky Lights had released their own studies arguing that their sausages were as low in fat as advertised.

Slimming World’s findings to the contrary have now been handed over to Trading Standards.
