Hope was in abundance at Sunday’s gala, from the success stories from members of the youth employment program, to the inspiring message of one of the evening’s honorees, Deborah Wortham, East Ramapo’s schools superintendent, who’s also the district’s cheerleader-in-chief.

Wortham and the center are partners in working to lift their students “all the way up” out of years of turmoil and negative perceptions.

Nathan Mungin III has been with the center for 20 years, starting as a counselor and then program director when he graduated from college, before taking over as executive director and CEO. Mungin reminded me that the center serves the entire community, not just its youngest, with a food pantry and a senior nutrition assistance program, among other things.

He said the center will be debuting a mobile health unit at the community cleanup scheduled for May 6. Exercise games The unit — a 44-foot mobile doctor’s office, will then be available two days a month outside the center itself.

Sunday’s gala, he said, was “a chance for us to bring people together from different communities to recognize not only the work that we do but the work of the community partners.”
