SHEPHERDSTOWN — Among the slew of reality TV shows that emerged in the mid-2000s, one – well, its title anyway – “So You Think You Can Dance?,” has appealed to me. For those who are unfamiliar with Zumba, it is an intense, cardio workout that combines Latin dance with step aerobics and some strength training. C exercises I don’t think the name means anything in Spanish, but it is fun to say and even more fun to participate in a class.

When I got to the room, a dance studio-style room with wooden floors and mirrors on the walls, I was among the last few stragglers coming in.

Most of my classmates, who were all female, had already gotten their heavy plastic step and placed their “Zumba sticks” along the wall with their various purses, water bottles, and sweatshirts.

Scrambling to catch up, I quickly ditched my belongings on one side of the room and got my equipment. Weight loss hair loss I was relieved to see a few more people enter the classroom after I had arrived.

Once we were all finished getting into place, the instructor, Ineabelle Ferreris, got us all ready to start.

After a brief introduction — during which she introduced me and Ron, The Journal’s photographer, who came to document my Zumba experience — Ferrerris began the class. As the music continued, I struggled to keep my steps synchronized with Ferreris and the rest of my classmates, especially when we began to use the “steps,” hard plastic blocks about six inches off the floor. Every now and then, I would get frustrated with myself when I couldn’t keep up with Ferreris’s frenetic pace. Exercise tiger documentary I’d often find myself doing the right move but on the wrong side of the step, or doing something out of time.

Fortunately, Zumba is very much a go-at-your-own pace activity, with some of us in the classroom pouring all of our energy into the step routines and others slowing down and doing what they could.

The rest of the class must have been regulars who attend every week, but I was caught off-guard when the singing was no longer in Spanish, but in English.

It was a cheesy love song, but not one I was expecting: “Certain as the sun/ rising in the East/ Tale as old as time/ song as old as rhyme/ Beauty and the Beast.”
