Diabetes group to meet Thursday

The next Support Group for Dealing with Diabetes meeting will be at Elm Park United Methodist Church at 401 Chestnut St. in Oneonta at 7 p. m. Thursday in the fellowship hall. The speakers this month will be Carly Simeone and Megan Usher, juniors in the nutrition and dietetics program at the State University College at Oneonta.

The two will offer a presentation titled “Satisfy


Your Sweet Tooth Without the Calories.” The presentation will educate on sugar substitutes, the importance of incorporating fresh fruit into the diet (and what to look for when buying frozen or canned fruit), as well as provide easy and suitable dessert recipe ideas. They will also bake some diabetic-friendly desserts for everyone to sample. Paper copies of the recipes will be available. The meetings are open to the public. Benefit craft, food auction set for Friday at church

Beta Sigma Phi will hold its annual craft and food auction on Friday at the Elm Park United Methodist Church on Chestnut Street in Oneonta. A preview will begin at 6 p. m. with the auction at 7 p. m. Proceeds from the auction, featuring handmade items, will benefit local charitable service organizations. Free refreshments will be served.

Fox to have flu shot clinic, pharmacy open house

A. O. Fox Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of Bassett Healthcare Network, will hold a flu shot clinic and pharmacy open house at FoxCare Pharmacy from 9 a. m. to noon Friday.

Those 19 and older can be vaccinated. Insurance cards should be presented for billing purposes; those without insurance coverage will be charged $25, with cash, check and major credit cards accepted. The staff at FoxCare Pharmacy will be available. In addition to medication counseling and vaccine education, there will be free door prizes and refreshments. The pharmacy is on the left-hand side of the FoxCare Center next to HealthLinks on state Route in Oneonta. For more information, call 431-5284.

Author signing, lecture to be held at Legion

Author David Brenner will sign books and giving a lecture on his latest book, “The Life and Letters of Christopher F. Kompare” at 1 p. m. Saturday at the Oneonta American Legion at 279 Chestnut St.

Brenner is a native Oneontan who served in the U. S. Army as an enlisted man and an officer. He was discharged in 1954.

Annual Oktoberfest dinner set at church

The fifth annual Otsego County Lutheran Parish German Oktoberfest Dinner will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church at 1 Center St. in Oneonta, at 5:30 p. m. Saturday.

The dinner celebrates German heritage and features primarily German foods. Those who attend are welcome to bring a dish to pass, preferably German in background, table service and a beverage. Beer and wine are welcome but may not be shared.

In the past sauerbraten, apple strudel, pork dishes, sauerkraut and German breads have been among the foods brought. Attendees may also wear German costumes.

The dinner is open to all.

No specific program is planned this year, but some German songs and music may be on the schedule, presenters said in a media release.

The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested by calling 432-6852.
